"We applied for an adoption grant, and LifeSong approved it!  LifeSong gave us a matching grant, which meant we had to ask friends and family for financial support.  Asking for help in this way was something we just weren't used to doing. But friends and family contributed, and we raised enough to get the full grant from LifeSong.  We were blessed with a total of $8,500 through LifeSong to help offset our adoption costs!"

Affording Adoption

So you've been called to adopt. Fantastic! You may be wondering what comes next on your adoption journey. One of the most stressful aspects of your journey will be considering the overall cost of various adoption programs.  Funding options, including adoption grants through the Woven Families Adoption Assistance Fund and interest-free loans, are two ways in which adopting families can subsidize adoption expenses.

Woven Families has partnered with Lifesong for Orphans, a nationally reputable 501(c)(3) tax-exempt organization that assists churches throughout the U.S. in administering adoption assistance funds. We highly encourage adopting families that meet eligibility requirements to consider Lifesong for the matching grant and interest-free covenant loan programs described below.

Matching Adoption Grants

Lifesong designed the Matching Grant Program to equip adopting families with the fundraising tools to encourage family and friends to contribute to the adoption journeys of individual families. Here's how it works:

1. Family members and friends can make tax deductible contributions to Lifesong to offset costs for adopting families.

2. Lifesong applies 100% of donations specifically toward the adopting family that contributors identify at time of contribution.

3. For qualified applicants, Lifesong matches fundraising contributions of adopting families with Woven Families' funds up to $4,000.

4. Upon approval of applications by Lifesong, the organization distributes funds directly to applicants' adoption agencies.

The average cost of adoption fell between
$25,000 to $30,000 (before consideration
of the Federal Adoption Tax Credit and other
applicable benefits) based on a recent survey.

Eligibility Requirements

To be eligible for grants, adopting families must meet the following requirements, in addition to all other requirements expressly stated in Lifesong's application:

1. Provide a statement of faith in Jesus Christ;

2. Be members of the CVVC church body who are engaged in the church through serving, small groups, and/or outreach opportunities;

3. Have a record of regular giving to CVVC;

4. Have completed a home study by a licensed social worker.

As the administrator of the Woven Families' fund, Lifesong manages each segment of the application process and retains all responsibility for decision making with regard to applicants.  Lifesong considers various factors before granting funds to qualified applicants, including amount of money in Woven Families' fund at time of application and financial status of applicants.

No member of the Woven Families ministry reviews adopting families' confidential information or influences the application process. Sole decision-making rests with Lifesong.

Interest-free Loans

Lifesong also offers an interest-free covenant loan program through its Lifesong Legacy Fund to assist qualified adopting families through loan amounts of approximately $5,000 to $7,500. The loans require adopting families to commit to repayment through manageable monthly or annual payments, which can be scheduled to coincide with the receipt of the Federal Adoption Tax Credit (up to $13,170 per child in 2010).

Under the terms of the interest-free loan program, Lifesong requires an adopting family to reimburse the organization the amount of the adoption tax credit used on the family's income tax return until the amount of the loan has been fully repaid. In cases of financial hardship during the repayment period, Lifesong will partner with a family to work through a crisis.

Lifesong awards loans based on availability of funds at time of applications and financial status of applicants.  As with the matching grants, Lifesong manages all aspects of the application and decision making processes related to the interest-free loans.
